Gluten-Free and Celiac Guide To Revelstoke, BC

Introduction

Gluten-Free & Celiac Guide to Revelstoke, British Columbia. Created by a Canadian with celiac who lived in Revelstoke. See below my recommendations and tips!

We found quite a few restaurants in this small town have gluten-free labelling on their menus or accommodations. Staff are very aware of the disease and can accommodate easily, just ask!

Full Disclosure: Of course, you can go to any restaurant and ask for gluten-free options, but they may not be able to accommodate cross-contamination.

What is Celiac Disease?

Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disorder triggered by ingesting gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. When individuals with Celiac Disease consume gluten, their immune system responds by attacking the lining of the small intestine, leading to inflammation and damage. As a result, vital nutrients cannot be properly absorbed, leading to various health complications. Celiac Disease is now recognized as one of the most common autoimmune disorders globally.

I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease when I was just 2 years old. It is a constant struggle to find restaurants I can eat at. I’ve found that many restaurants are giving gluten-friendly options but not gluten-free ones. During my travels, I have to research before I eat anywhere.

While staying in Revelstoke I found many gluten-free restaurants and a few celiac-friendly. Read this blog for my recommendations!

Gluten-Free Guide Explained - Symbols vs Ask The Waiter

Ask The Waiter! Many restaurants don’t have any symbols or gluten-free menus. But you can ask the waiter what can be made gluten-free. In doing this I have had some amazing accommodations.

Gluten-Free Symbols! Symbols on their menu indicating allergens. You should still ask about cross-contamination.

For the best celiac experience, Terravita’s Kitchen is #1. Their products are from the Terra Firma Farm! This is my absolute favourite place to eat in Revelstoke. With a dedicated menu, anything can be made gluten-free, just ask for that option and you are set. Along with their in-house menu, they also have sweets and bake their bread to order.
